He was born to the legendary Canadian wrestler Rocky Johnson and his mother Ata Johnson belongs to a very notable family in the wrestling world. The proud father of the wrestler turned actor Dwayne Johnson was also a professional wrestler known in the wresting world as the Rocky Johnson. Rocky Johnson wasn’t the first given to him, it was Wayde Douglas. He changed his name in 1964 to better suit it with his passion that was wrestling. During his career as a Canadian Professional Wrestler, Rocky Johnson became the National Wrestling Alliance Georgia Champion and also the National Wrestling Association Southern Heavyweight Memphis Champion. He has his own Wikipedia page full of his achievements and victory status in many other championships. Despite of all his achievements he has seen his fare share of hardships and that keeps him humble. In the Rock’s own words,

“My dad, Rocky Johnson is a minimalist. Always has been. Never asks me for much and over the years his needs are always the barest.”

But his son Dwayne Johnson revealed the gut-wrenching childhood story of his dad in his instagram post while saying him thank you for everything he did and surprising him with a new truck. Dwayne Johnson’s grandfather died when his dad was just 13 years old. His mom brought her new boyfriend home for the Christmas, who got drunk and pissed on the Turkey. The 13 year old Rocky laid him out in the cold. They called cops and his mom said to him “Get Out.” It all went south and Rocky became homeless, but despite all his hardships he made a name for himself. Dwayne remembered his own childhood with his dad saying,

“Makes me appreciate his struggle and hard work. Also, makes me appreciate the fun times he would beat my ass in the gym so bad when I was 13 and say “If you’re gonna throw up, go outside.. and if you’re gonna cry, then go home to your mother”. I hated it then, but I embrace it now. Made a man outta me. Without pissing on my turkey.”

Feagaimaleata Fitisemanu Maivia aka Ata Johnson is the beautiful lady who brought Dwayne Johnson in this world. Ata Johnson comes from the much known Samoan wrestling family and it was also wrestling that brought Rocky Johnson and Ata Johnson close to each other. She was the daughter of the High Chief Peter Maivia and her mother was Lia Maivia. Rocky Johnson met Peter Maivia at the age of 16 when he moved to Toronto to follow his passion of wrestling. Peter and Rocky were tag team partner in an independent match scene and that was the moment when he met Ata. The two fell madly in love. Despite Peter’s disapproval, they got married and on 2 May 1972, Dwayne was born.

Back then, wrestling was done for passion and there wasn’t much money in it as it wasn’t a very high paying job. They had to travel a lot and Rocky would participate in any competition to win the prize and make the both ends meet. When Dwayne was 14 years old, he moved to Honolulu with his mother just because they could afford the travel expenses for each family member. They had their fair share of struggles. But it almost fell apart when rocky couldn’t get anything and they were forced to evacuate the house. While remembering those times, this is what Dwayne had to say,

“We were living in an efficiency that cost $120 a week. We come home, and there’s a padlock on the door and an eviction notice. My mom starts bawling. She just started crying and breaking down. ‘Where are we going to live? What are we going to do?’”
